Halo Combat Evolved first released in 2001 and became a top selling Xbox game, selling over 5 million copies. It was soon followed by Halo 2 and we are now awaiting the release of Halo 3 for the Xbox 360.

The games follows a story of super soldier "Master Chief John-117" who fights the "Conenant" alien race in the 26th century to save mankind.

As the story is so significant to the game, in August 2005 Microsoft announced they were making a Halo film...
written by Alex Garland author of The Beach.

Last week both Fox and Universal who were signed up in the beginning stopped the funding to the Halo movie which, was due to the big screen in 2008, as they requested Microsoft to take a smaller profit on the venture.

"While the exit of two studios would seem to imperil "Halo," Kamins said Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution partners. Prep work on the film continues, he said. One advantage is having Jackson and Walsh as exec producers: Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stoppage."

So it looks like Halo the movie will still be made with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh who together have worked on big titles including Lord of the Rings and King Kong.
