Skype is a free software package that allows you to make free calls through you computer. It looks very similar to windows messenger, where you build up a list of contacts which can be managed into groups.
There are a 3 main ways to make Skype calls.
Skype to Skype
This is a free service where any 2 people with the Skpye software can call each other free via their computers.
Skype In with Voicemail
When using this method you are provided with a Skype number, so you can be called from a normal phone line at a reduced rate. If you are offline then the Skype Voicemail will ensure you don't miss the call. This costs as little as £1.92 a month.
SkypeOut
This is just like a pay as you go mobile, buy credit to make calls. From your Skype account you can call normal landlines and mobile at a reduced rate, with no connection fee. This looks like a useful option if you have friends and family outside the UK.

SMS from your keyboard to a mobile at cheap rates, Video calls if you have a webcam and 4 way conference calls.
Keep in mind, with Skype no emergency calls can be made, so consider one of the dual VoIP
phones to use your landline to make a call.
